Wrestling Life Lesson From Mick Foley

Keeping a sock down your pants comes in handy

In the fall of 1998, Mick “Mankind” Foley used a sock puppet to entertain the hospital-bed-ridden Mr. McMahon. Sadly for Mankind, the action proved ineffective; and actually got Foley thrown out of the hospital by Mr. McMahon.

Instead of letting Mr. Socko fade away into wrestling obscurity, Mankind kept Mr. Socko around to become more than just a piece of comedic genius. Instead, long before Santino Marella’s cobra covering, Mr. Socko became the symbol of mouth-based attacks such as Mankind’s Mandible Claw. Long gone was the two-finger covering that allowed Mankind’s middle and ring fingers to slip into an opponent’s mouth for the debilitating submission maneuver. Welcome Mr. Socko – a cloth weapon that would smile at the person Mankind was inflicting pain upon. But how could Mankind utilize Mr. Socko in a haste? Hiding it in his pants for quick retrieval action, of course.

So, if you’re ever in a situation where you need to defend yourself or even use the Mandible Claw, make sure to leave home with a smiling sock in your pants or else you might be the one who is put in the same position as Mr. McMahon the same night Mr. Socko made its grand debut.
