My Song – Fireflies

It was the first time you heard a particular note, drum beat or electronically created sound that made your ears tingle, your heart skip a beat and resonated with your soul. This is “My Song” – a series where the music that makes the person is spotlighted. James Bullock writes about a song that became his video game “fight” theme.

As noted in a previous article, this May marked the fifth anniversary of the greatest moment of my life thus far when he comes to playing video games. To summarize the happenings and how it applies to this “My Song”, only twenty-four hours after I celebrated my birthday I entered a Gamestop and ended up being involved in a single-elimination “UFC Undisputed 2009” tournament. Throughout the night, Owl City’s “Fireflies” was continuously blasting through the store’s speakers thanks to the song’s popularity at the time and it being used for advertisements for various games and even Gamestop itself. The song that was relatively foreign to me until that night slowly but surely became my fight song – the “Eye of the Tiger” to my Rocky Balboa. And like Rocky, I walked away victorious that night even though I was the believed underdog by not only my opponent’s supporters, but also the people I defeated who wanted to see me fall. I truly lit up the competition that night.
