Past’s Anchor

“Study the past if you would divine the future” – Confucius

No matter how much we hate to admit it, regrets and longing for the past to change the mistakes we’ve made are a natural occurrence like the sun rising. These feelings can be passing glimpses or anchors that hold us down years after the situations happened. While people will tell you to let go of the past and move on, don’t. The fact is our past, for better or worse, is what makes us who we are today. To forget our past is to forget whom we are.

So what can you do to progress with the help of your past rather than be held back by that same time? It’s not the memories or incidents that clutch you, but the feelings. Once you move past those feelings of regret or disappointment, joy or happiness can you enjoy your past, embrace the present, and look forward to the future. That knowledge of your old mistakes and triumphs, you’ll enter the new day with resolve and perseverance.
