In this next evolution of “The Video Gamer’s Experience” I turn to you, the gamer, to find out what makes you tick when it comes to this entertainment medium based on interactivity, technological boundaries being obliterated, and emotional moments shared by thousands of people across the globe. Today’s interviewee: Eric V.
What’s the first game you remember playing?
TMNT II The Arcade Game for NES. Hard as hell, just like every other NES game. I still remember the Pizza Hut product placement in the burning building.
When did you realize you were a gamer?
I can’t remember a time before being a gamer. Been begging to play games since as long as I could speak.
Is there one story in your life that was directly impacted by a game?
My cousin let me borrow a Game Boy Color and Pokemon Gold for months. Of course, I got attached and addicted. I sank hours into this game. When he asked for it back, I hid it and said I couldn’t find it. His dad yelled at me until I cried of guilt and retrieved it. It was like The Tell-Tale Heart. Except I was 10. And it wasn’t a dismembered body parts. It was Pokemon.
What’s your favorite video game genre?
Action Adventure. Preferably co-op. I’m the guy who loves Resident Evil 5.
What’s your favorite video game franchise?
So many to choose from. I want to choose one so it’s not a cop out. Let’s go with… Mega Man X.
Is there one game you’ve never had the chance to play that you regret not playing?
Final Fantasy VII. I missed that boat because I thought turn based combat was stupid at the time. Truth is, I was stupid at the time. Now I’m just waiting on the remake…and waiting…and waiting…and waiting….
What’s the best video game purchase you made?
Probably Halo 3. If I never bought it, my future friend would never had heard the monks chanting on the title screen from my dorm room, introduced me to his friends which became my friends, have unforgettable LAN parties, and drop out of college. Thanks Bungie.
What’s the worst video game purchase you made?
Shaq Fu. More like Shaq F U.
What video game character do you most relate to?
Lee Everett. He kinda looks like me and I made all of his decisions. *SPOILERS for a six year old game* RIP Lee. RIP Telltale.
If a game based on you was made what would it be like?
It’d be the worst game ever. You’d sit at a desk for 40 hours a week. Scream in traffic for one third of your day. Play video games…in this video game. You’d have to charge your phone every two hours. Basically a shittier Shenmue. Still better than Shaq Fu.
What are you playing now and what are you looking forward to playing in the near future?
Just finished Spider-Man, God of War, and Hyrule Warriors this month. And I Always keep Tekken 7, DragonBall FighterZ and Street Fighter V in the rotation. I just started Horizon Zero Dawn. And speaking of horizons, Smash Brothers Ultimate is on the horizon. I can’t wait.
Your desert island games?
I would need variety. And bang for my buck. And replay value. Let’s assume I have all the consoles and just a few games for some reason. Let’s see how short I can make this: Tekken 7, Breath of The Wild, Tales of Vesperia, Resident Evil 4, TMNT Turtles in Time, Pokemon (Heart)Gold. MegaMan X5 for the soundtrack alone.
How can people keep up with everything you’re doing?
Google “Meanmuggah11” and click all the links. Twitch, Twitter, and Dead End Gaming especially. Thanks for the opportunity.
