In this next evolution of “The Video Gamer’s Experience” I turn to you, the gamer, to find out what makes you tick when it comes to this entertainment medium based on interactivity, technological boundaries being obliterated, and emotional moments shared by thousands of people across the globe. Today’s interviewee: WeirdWolf.
What’s the first game you remember playing?
The first game I remember playing myself is probably “Tetris” on the original GameBoy. Not soon later, I started playing “Pokémon Yellow”, which I poured hundreds of hours into.
When did you realize you were a gamer?
Pretty late actually. I had a gaming break without even noticing it when I was younger. But as soon as I started playing video games again when I was around 13 or 14, I realized I was really into it.
Is there one story in your life that was directly impacted by a game?
Many, actually, but one is most noticeable by being way out of scope of what I usually play. A round of “Garry’s Mod” brought me some of the best friends I have, albeit being scattered all over the world. I have been gaming with them ever since and have visited some of them. Lucky that I felt like multiplayer that day!
What’s your favorite video game genre?
Anything that has got a good story and characters fit in my game shelf. So that’s usually narrative adventures, RPGs, walking simulators and of course good, old-fashioned shooting-jumping-climbing-action-adventure.
What’s your favorite video game franchise?
Oh boy, that’s like asking someone their favourite song of their life… I guess it depends on my mood. If you would force me to pick one, it would probably by “Life is Strange”. Or “What Remains of Edith Finch”. Or “Kingdom Hearts”. Or “The Last of Us”. You see my problem.
Is there one game you’ve never had the chance to play that you regret not playing?
I never played the original “Tomb Raider” games, and now I am not so sure if I’ll ever enjoy them after games like “Uncharted”.
What’s the best video game purchase you made?
That has got to be the first “Life is Strange”. I was really skeptical of the game, and it blew me away, basically out of nowhere. Years later, I still think of the game quite often.
What’s the worst video game purchase you made?
“Jak II”. I love the first “Jak & Daxter”. Of course, the best idea was to make the sequel to be moody, full of guns, bad platforming, glitches and giving the protagonist the voice of the average cheese grater. Great.
What video game character do you most relate to?
Odd pick, but it is Neil from “To the Moon”. A guy who is trying to be hilarious basically all the time, but also has a different side where he suddenly takes things serious (while still making jokes). Pretty much me.
If a game based on you was made what would it be like?
Imagine a game filled with a lot of levels, but some levels are calm, well paced, thought out and deep, while the others are an explosion of crazy. Better yet, image a combination of “What Remains of Edith Finch” and “Deadpool”. I would play that.
What are you playing now and what are you looking forward to playing in the near future?
Given it’s recent release, I am of course all over the first episode of “Life is Strange 2” and can’t await to play the rest, hoping it will be great. Other than that, I recently started playing “The Witcher 3”, because I heard a lot of good thing about CD Project RED. In the near future I am looking forward to “Devil May Cry 5” and “Kingdom Hearts III”.
Your desert island games?
Those have to be entertaining for a long time, so potentially these:
Kingdom Hearts II
Final Fantasy XV
Detroit: Become Human
God of War
Minecraft (because why not)
How can people keep up with everything you’re doing?
I have a YouTube channel on which I play mostly the kind of games mentioned above. You can find it at https://www.youtube.com/weirdwolf.
