Wrestling Life Lesson From Shane McMahon

Setbacks Can’t Destroy Goals

Shane McMahon 2016

Professional wrestling is truly a reflection of life – its highs & lows, struggles & triumphs – in one of the most grandiose forms. The face of what he dubbed “sports entertainment” is none other than Vince McMahon. And during Mr. McMahon’s life, he’s raised two children; with the oldest being his son, Shane. Shane, like his father, took pride in doing the unexpected in situations no normal individual should walk away from; let alone thrive. Shane, after a near decade-long hiatus from his father’s company, returned with one goal in mind: manage/run WWE’s flagship program, “Monday Night Raw”.

But just being the owner’s son didn’t mean Shane got whatever he wanted. In fact, Shane’s demand came with a threat of blackmail due to the McMahon son knowing his request would be seen as an act of aggression toward his controlling and, at times, paranoid father. Shane was right and given the opportunity to achieve his goal, but only if he could defeat the monstrous Undertaker in a Hell in a Cell match at “Wrestlemania” – the most dangerous Steel Cage match in WWE history during the company’s biggest event of the year. Shane, no matter how hard he tried, couldn’t overcome the much larger, tougher, and dangerous foe. Yet, one night after losing, Vince rewarded his son’s valiant nature and gave him the opportunity to run “Raw” … for the next four weeks. After WWE’s latest pay-per-view, Shane is still running the show (though now alongside his sister, Stephanie).

Even when you take a loss, be it due to your own doing or at the hands of a near seven-foot demon from Death Valley in front of a crowd reaching the six digits, don’t give up. There’s a great chance everything will work out if you just hold onto hope, don’t walk away, or hold your head (or thumb) down in the face of defeat. Who knows – you could end up just like Shane McMahon and get what you fought for one night after losing what you believed what was your single opportunity.
