Eddie Kingston vs. Green Ant

The champ found himself being outmaneuvered and searching for the ropes to free himself of Ant’s grip. Growing frustrated over Ant’s abilities and somewhat mockery of the champ’s toughness, Kingston simply knocked him out of the ring. Kingston didn’t follow, waiting for Ant to reenter and begin a sequence that saw Green get caught in the capture overhead suplex. The champ’s attention moved to the back and abdomen of Ant. Green Ant refused to stay down for longer than a second any time Kingston went for the pin after several strikes and even a fisherman’s gut-buster. Keeping Ant close to the mat almost cost the titleholder when the potential challenger yanked an incoming arm into the omoplata. The nearness of the ropes saved Kingston from a great amount of damage to his right shoulder. Rallying behind Ant were the fans who couldn’t save The Colony member from Kobashi-like chops in the corner. With Ant stumbling, Eddie jumped off the second rope to drop a knee. “War King” landed gingerly on his left leg, causing his knee to buckle. Ant saw Kingston hobbling, going after the leg when he had the chance to fight back. Stopping the backdrop driver only put Ant in position for a reverse DDT … to give Kingston a near fall!

But Kingston was slow to follow up as he scaled the ropes; allowing Ant to recover and dragon screw leg whip him off of Eddie’s perch. Kick after kick, stomp after stomp aimed at the champ’s legs and back had “War King” in a vulnerable position for the first time. Unable to get off the canvas quickly, Kingston found himself stuck in the figure four leg lock. Making it to the ropes again, Eddie goaded Ant into kicking at him instead of going for another submission. This allowed Kingston to counter, clothesline and suplex Ant … to earn a two count!

The crowd was getting behind the masked man as he tried to out-strike the hard-hitting champion. Headbutt-Olympic slam combo too gave Ant a two count. Green Ant was the first to get up, but not the first to strike as Kingston stopped a strike to hit that backdrop driver. Suddenly, Kevin Steen came out to mock Kingston. Eddie came after him, only for Steen to take his jovial leave. The distraction helped Ant in the fullest as he caught Kingston coming in with the Texas cloverleaf. Kingston immediately tapped out in this non-title affair.

Winner: Green Ant (16:01)

Is It A Classic: This match accomplished three things: 1 – delivered a very good bout halfway through the event; 2 – add fuel for the next night’s battle between Kingston and Steen; 3 – add a big question mark if and when Kingston and Ant fight for the title in the near future could a title change happen. Good stuff all round.
