Mercedes Martinez vs. Mia Yim

Mouthing off at Daffney, Mercedes Martinez got caught off guard with a series of pinning combinations topped off by the hurricarana. Putting a stop to the high-speed onslaught, Martinez caught Yim coming in with the choke slam. Martinez wasn’t playing at all, chopping Mia to her heart’s content before choking her. Top rope-assisted neck breaker worked for Martinez, but couldn’t get her the pin thanks to the nearness of the ropes. Yim held on, turning a running attack into the tarantula when she was stuck in the corner. Mercedes got free, kicking Yim in the face to earn a two count. Stopping a superplex, Mia was able to kick her way into locking Mercedes in the octopus stretch before sending Mercedes to the unpadded floor. Martinez cut off Yim with a right hand to stop the dive, looking for a pin that wasn’t successful.

The Three Amigos worked to perfection, but only gave Mercedes a two count. Yakuza kick missed for Mercedes, putting her in prime position for the caperana that also ended in a two count, but this time for Mia. Yim’s attempt at the wheelbarrow bulldog didn’t work, ending with her taking a face buster. It was all Mercedes’ strikes until Yim gave her a taste of her own medicine before utilizing a German suplex-missile dropkick combo. Dragging Mercedes to the corner, Mia was ready to unleash Sky Yim. Instead, Yim hit nothing but canvas both because of her missed attack and because of the backdrop driver from Mercedes that followed. Instead of going for the sure pin, Martinez picked Yim up for the Fisherman Buster. Countering in midair, Yim yanked Martinez to the mat with a small package to pick up a shocking three count.

Winner: Mia Yim (9:30)

Is It A Classic: A really good encounter between two future Mae Young Classic competitors with the story of Mia’s youth overcoming Martinez’s need to continue her punishment during the home stretch. Not a classic, but a very good example of tournament action pushing forward dark horses in impressive fashion.
